Spanning from 9 July until 20 August, the International Festival for Symphonic Music, now in its 31st edition, will bring a few noteworthy events to the Tunisian town of El Djem.
The orchestra and choir of the National Radio Company of Ukraine opened the festival with a performance of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, which took place on 9 July in the town's iconic Roman amphitheater of Thysdrus.
The same historical location will see more classical music events in the upcoming weeks: Vienna's orchestra Wiener Opernball Orchestra, Tunisian singer Hassen Doss accompanied by the Tunisian Symphonic Orchestra, Italian Maggio Musicale orchestra from Florence, New South Africa classical music collective while Melinda Doolittle from the USA will infuse the theatre with a dosage of jazz, among a few other events that focus on Western classical music.
The International Festival for Symphonic Music in El Djem was launched in 1986 by Mohamed Eljem Ennaceur who is the former mayor of the city, as well as former minister and current Honorary President and Chairman of the Tunisian Parliament.
For over three decades, the festival has attracted many music lovers to Tunisia's ancient city and its historic amphitheatre that is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.
